Mylinda Marie (Perry) Cane, 56, passed away on September 29, 2018, of metastatic breast cancer at her home in Schererville, Indiana. A longtime advocate of cancer research and patients, she was instrumental in developing cancer programs serving northwest Indiana for Community Hospital, eventually becoming the chief marketing executive for the organization including, Community Hospital, St. Catherine Hospital, and St. Mary Medical Center for over a 25-year career. Prior, as a journalist for The Times, she was the business editor and a leader in online newspaper design. She is survived by her loving husband Michael Cane, and three adoring children Kristin (Grant) Duncan of Valparaiso, IN, Kevin Cane of Chicago, IL, and Marionna Cane of Columbia, SC; admiring sisters Manette DeCremer of Crystal Lake, IL and Michelle (Chris) Mutert of Arvada, CO; her caring brother, Mark (Jackie) Perry and their children of Dimondale, MI; and her father Robert Perry of Finlay, OH. She is proceeded in death by her mother Reva Mae Heckert. A native of Adrian, Michigan and a graduate of Michigan State University, Mylinda moved to northwest Indiana in 1984 to work for The Times as a business reporter covering the region’s major industrial issues. Within a year she was named business editor, winning awards for her enterprise. In 1991, Mylinda was recruited to develop Community Hospital’s first community relations and marketing department. As the organization evolved to become Community Healthcare System comprised of three hospitals, Mylinda served as the organization’s chief marketing executive. She also managed the Center for the Visual and Performing Arts in Munster, which includes a catering business, and the region’s only non-profit equity theatre. Mylinda served as a founding board member of both the Community Cancer Research Foundation and the Task Force for Community Cancer Resource Center.Among Mylinda’s cancer advocacy work was her development of the annual “Lights of Life” program honoring the lives of those touched by cancer, which has raised nearly $200,000 to support local cancer research initiatives. Her other public service included a board appointment to the Munster Education Foundation and committee work to advance opportunities for gifted and talented students. She proudly served as president and board member for the Dunes Learning Center, guiding children to establish meaningful connections with nature.A certified Master Gardener, Mylinda mentored other gardeners and opened her home for garden walks. She started a semi-annual program at the Cancer Resource Center called “Inspirations from the Garden” to introduce the public to the healing garden and the resources of the cancer center.As an ardent supporter of the arts, Mylinda nurtured talents in others and particularly championed local creative arts communities that opened doors for the region. Her own vision for expressive outlets led her to pursue fine art photography, and her award-winning work has been exhibited in galleries in Indiana, Illinois, and Michigan.Loved and admired for her kindness, generosity, and passion, Mylinda’s greatest legacy lies in the impact she has made on countless people near her, selflessly guiding others to achieve their greatest potential.Visitation will be held Saturday, October 6, 2018, from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Kish Funeral Home, 10000 Calumet Avenue, Munster, IN. A celebration of life service will be held on October 7, 2018, at 3:30 pm at Ridge United Methodist Church, 8607 Columbia Avenue, Munster, IN. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to METAvivor, an organization that directs 100% of donations to underfunded research for metastatic breast cancer at metavivor.org.
