RICHIE WAS A GREAT UNION BROTHER - EVERY TIME WE SAW ONE ANOTHER WAS NOT ONLY A NEEDED COUNSELING SESSION BUT A THOUGHT PROVOKING PHOTOGRAPHY LESSON - WE NEVER DISCUSSED WELDING - I AM A BETTER MAN FOR HAVING MET HIM AND JUST WANTED TO TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO SAY I'M THANKFUL FOR IT

Richie, I'm going to miss you BROTHER. You are one of the last of a generation of Elite Pipefitter/Welders that helped make our Union local 597 the leader in the industry that it still is today. You helped set the bar high for many to try and follow. The ones who followed your example became much better if not great Pipefitter/welders because of it, as well as becoming better individuals in the process, and they were hardly ever out of work and always able to provide for their families because of it, thanks to your help and instruction. I've had the opportunity to work on so many different jobs in and around our locals jurisdiction since first starting in Dec. of 1977 and I can honestly say that you are one of the best all around welders/great guy that I've ever had the pleasure to work around. There are a lot of welders who talked the talk but could never walk the walk. You walked the walk and then some. You were very humble in your approach and outlook. You never talked about yourself and your special skills as a person, instructor, pipefitter and welder. You let your welds and your work and actions do the talking for you. You led by example. You were and always will be a true PROFESSIONAL. You never talked down to anyone that was looking for help, even those who had a hard of trying to learn how to weld on an elite level such as yourself and a select group of others. You never walked away from anyone who was willing to learn and needed help and that speaks volumes to you as a person, and that is why you were so loved and respected by so many apprentices and journeymen who's lives that you touched through out your years and career as a Pipefitter and Instructor of Local 597. I had the pleasure of first meeting you and working around you early in 1978 where our friendship began in McCartin/McAuliffe's fab shop on Chicago Ave. in East Chicago In. Rich I can honestly say that you helped to form and influence me as a welder, as well as teach me a lot of the necessary skills that I needed to survive and to be a better than average pipefitter and welder, instruction and advice that I carried with me still to this day, advice that helped me to survive and make it through some of the tough times and putting me in a position to always be able to provide for my family, and for that I will be forever grateful. Thanks again for everything Rich, I'm going to miss you more than you will probably ever know, you always were a true gentleman and a great friend and someone that I always looked up to and respected. Take care and God speed. Love you Rich your friend and brother Joe Soltys.

Richard was my brother whom I loved. Although we sometimes had our differences we always came back together for fun and laughter. He never failed to make people laugh with his silly antics. He will be missed by all family members and friends.
